River Cities Speedway Mental Health Awareness Event
The Rural Psychology and Integrated Care (RPIC) program coordinated a race night sponsorship opportunity at River Cities Speedway inGrand Forks,NDfor mental health providers in the area. The purpose of this event was two-fold. Most importantly, our goal was to raise awareness of mental health concerns and to reduce the stigma associated with mental health help-seeking. Second, the purpose of this race night event was to give mental health providers in the area the opportunity to advertise the services they provide to a large weekly audience.
The race night sponsorship included a large billboard on the racetrack which was up for the entire racing season. A full-page ad promoting mental health and the sponsoring providers was included in the race program throughout the year. One race event was designated as a mental health awareness night. Sponsoring providers handed out informational and promotional materials to individuals who attended that evening. The RPIC group wrote brief public service announcements that were read during breaks and intermissions during the sponsored racing night.
The mental health providers who participated in the summer of 2011 race night sponsorship included Assessment and Therapy Associates of Grand Forks, Family Institute, PC, and the Center for Self Growth and Renewal.
