Scholarships

The Department of Physical Education, Exercise Science and Wellness (PXW) offers two scholarships for PXW majors. These two scholarships are the Julia Isensee Keegan Memorial Endowment and the Len and Ceil Marti Scholarship.

Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships using the following cover sheet and application form.

1. Julia Isensee Keegan Award 
   Keegan was born in Annandale, MN and was raised on a farm near Oriska, ND. She attended the University of North Dakota and in 1919 became the first woman to graduate from the University with a degree in Physical Education. The Julia Isensee Keegan Memorial Endowment was established to furnish scholarships, loans and grants in aid for students majoring in health and physical education with specific preference to be shown for female students. However, the PXW Department has also awarded the Keegan Scholarship to outstanding male students. Both females and males are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.
   
   If you expect to graduate in December, you may be awarded a partial annual amount. This scholarship is typically awarded to 4-5 students annually. Awards range from $500-$1000 depending on how much is forthcoming each year from the UND Foundation.
2. Len and Ceil Marti Scholarship
   Len Marti, professor of HPER, served as department chair, and then as athletic director at UND. The Len and Ceil Marti Memorial Endowment was established to recognized the accomplishment of a student who satisfied the following criteria: 
   a. The student must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Physical Education.
   b. The student must have a strong academic background. 
   c. The student does not have to be an athlete, but athletes will be given priority. 
   d. The student should have financial need.

This scholarship is typically awarded to one student annually. This award is typically valued at $125.
