Early Childhood Education Undergraduate Program

 

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program Area is part of the Department of Teaching and Learning within the College of Education and Human Development. ECE programs focus on preparing teachers to work with children ages 0-8, in preschools, Head Start, nursery schools, kindergartens and the primary grades (1-3), and child care centers. The Education programs within the College are fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Colleges of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Graduates of the Early Childhood Education program will be life-long learners and reflective teachers who engage children in constructivist environments.

The early childhood education program emphasizes the child in his/her context of family, culture and community. The program is constructivist and includes developmentally appropriate practices, emergent curriculum, descriptive assessment, problem-solving approaches to resolving conflict and choices for children. Teachers must be observers, learners, independent decision-makers, yet be reflective and collaborate with others.
