What Others are Saying
Joining UND’s ELL Education program was the most successful decision ~
"As I look back on my decision to join the online graduate ELL program at UND, it was one of the most successful decisions I ever made. Not only the online program was excellent in preparing me for a teaching career, it was especially convenient to me because I was working while obtaining my degree, and this helped me balance both work and school.
Currently, I am an ELL teacher at a local elementary school here in Grand Forks. I have found the ELL program courses taught at UND to be very relevant and useful to me in my present teaching job. UND professors provided a great environment for learning and were always available to answer questions and provide guidance. I wholeheartedly appreciate all that I gained from the UND ELL program and would definitely recommend it to others."

Quality of the program and the dedication of the professors ~
"I was very pleased with the quality and dedication of the professors to this on-line Graduate ELL program. It provided me with the opportunity to earn a Master of Education in ELL education while I was in Virginia. I was a teacher of adult ESL at a community-based organization and a private educational institution in Virginia. Although my fundamental duty was to facilitate the development of communication skills in English, my duties also included materials development and selection, lesson planning, curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, and even mental health counseling or referrals. Not having formal and informal training and experiences in teaching adult ESL, I decided to enroll in this online program while I was still teaching.
I liked the flexibility of on-line classes, but I really liked the way the materials for each course were presented. They were straightforward and easy to understand. The professors were very experienced and responsive, using many modes (email, phone, Skype, Google hangout, etc.) to connect with students. Every course was challenging but I learned a lot from each course, especially from linguistics, second language acquisition, ELL teaching methods and materials, bilingual education, and ELL literacy education. Now I am in a doctoral program in Teaching and Learning at University of North Dakota, pursuing my dream to study more about ELL education."

Through the program at UND, I was able to provide a framework to identify our students’ needs ~
The Graduate English Language Learner program at UND greatly supported my work with ELL students. When I started the program, my school did not have a process for identifying the proficiency levels of our students. Through the program at UND, I was able to provide a framework to identify our students’ needs as well as appropriately assess our students based on their English proficiency level. I have used and shared pertinent pedagogy, valuable tools, and strategies that I have gained from the classes and faculty from UND, which has shaped what our ELL program looks like today. As a mother, wife, and teacher abroad, the flexibility of the online program has helped me to meet these areas all while completing my degree!

To be qualified to continue teaching ELL and specialized in the ELL education field ~
"I am a veteran ELL teacher in North Dakota and I, like most of the ELL teachers that I started with, had no previous education in the ELL field. UND's online programs and their instructors have not only enabled me to be qualified to continue teaching ELL, but also become specialized in the field that I love and have had many years of experience with.
What I experienced through UND's programs was a genuine concern for meeting the needs of the ELL population that we deal with in the Midwest. I consider UND to be a great advocate for our district ELL program and that the instructors have always cared about me personally as well as respected me professionally."

Opened more doors for me ~
"The [English Language Learners] program really gave me a leg up. I always knew that I wanted to be a specialist where I could work with small groups of students. The ELL endorsement opened more doors for me."
