Overview of the Application Process
To take IDT classes at UND, you must first be admitted to the graduate school as either a degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking student. Non-degree-seeking students may take IDT classes and transfer them in to the degree if and when they are admitted to the IDT program. Degree-seeking students in non-IDT fields can take IDT classes as part of a minor or cognate, or for one of the certificates. Degree-seeking students in IDT may take classes as part of the Ph.D., M.Ed. or M.S. programs, or as part of one of the certificates. There is a great deal of overlap between the Distance Education and On-Campus programs. As a Distance Education student, you'll attend class through the Internet. On-Campus students come to UND and attend class in-person. The first step in both cases is to make application to the graduate school as described in each category below. Please select the category that applies to your situation and location for more information.
Online (Distance Education) Students
You plan to attend scheduled classes at a distance via the Internet. Note that the Ph.D. is not available as a distance program.
--You will attend the same class sessions as your on-campus classmates; the only difference is that you will use the Internet to see, hear, and present information. You will be heard in real-time during class discussions, and will be able to participate fully in live class sessions as if you were in the room. This is what is referred to as a "hybrid" model.
--Begin the application process by filling out the online form, referring to the following information during this process:
- Select "UND Bismarck / UND Fargo / UND Casper OT program / Online / IVAN " on your application
- Select the appropriate degree or certificate program option for IDT. For the Master's degrees, select "Instructional Design and Technology (M.S., M/Ed.)". For the Ph.D. option, select "Teaching and Learning (Ph.D., Ed.D.)." For either of the certificates, scroll all the way down to "CERTIFICATES" and select either "K-12 Technology Integration (Certificate Program)" or "Corporate Training and Performance (Certificate Program)
You will need to submit the following with your application.
- A statement of your goals and objectives. The application contains the questions you'll need to address in this statement.
- A certified copy of each of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts (this includes schools at which a degree was not completed). Note that this is true even if your transcript is from UND--it must be officially sent by certified by the UND registrar's office via certified mail. Start this process immediately, as it may take several weeks to get all transcripts you need.
- Three letters of recommendation from people who are familiar with your academic skills and/or work ethic. (An instructor, mentor, or work supervisor is a good choice. A spouse, relative, or friend is not.) Each referee will be given a link to submit his or her letter of recommendation online.
- A $35 application fee.
--Once you have started the application process, call or email UND's Department of Continuing Education (1-800.CALL.UND or UND.Info@email.und.edu) to make them aware of your presence as a prospective student.
--After you have been admitted by the Graduate School, contact the Department of Continuing Education (1-800.CALL.UND or UND.Info@email.und.edu) to let them know you've been accepted. Continuing Education will inform you of how to proceed with registration, tuition payment, and acquiring books.
--Begin IDT Bootcamp, the online training you need to be ready for the first day of class.
--Speak with an Instructional Design & Technology advisor. The advisor can offer suggestions as to which and how many courses would best fit your situation. Send an email to und.idt@email.und.edu or call Dr. Van Eck at 701-777-3574 to discuss advising.
On-Campus Students
You plan to attend scheduled classes "in person" at the UND Campus.
--Some of your classmates will be Distance Education students. (We refer to this format as "hybrid.") You'll find information regarding how Distance Education students attend courses through UND's Department of Continuing Education.
--Begin the application process by filling out the online form.

--After you have been admitted to the Graduate School, you will be issued an EMPL ID. This is an 7 digit numerical code that starts with W. You will be given instructions on how to register for classes using your EMPL ID and UND's Campus Connection. You will get your tuition bill via Campus Connection as well. You will be able to activate your UND email account using your EMPL ID. Your instructor will inform you of what books are required for your class(es). Books will be available either at one of UND's campus bookstores or through a reputable online retailer.
